Rick Rubin Returns to His NYU Dorm Room Where Def Jam Started

Record producer Rick Rubin is the co-founder of the legendary Def Jam label, and is a key figure behind the popularity and commercial rise of hip-hop. In 1985, while attending New York University, Rick and Russell Simmons founded Def Jam in his dorm room. It was from they bowed with the T La Rock and Jazzy Jay single “It’s Yours,” issued in association with Partytime/Streetwise.

Their first record released was LL Cool J’s “I Need a Beat” and Rick Rubin went on to find more hip-hop acts in New York. With artiste such as the Beastie Boys, LL Cool J, Public Enemy and Run–D.M.C. on board, Def Jam grew into a successful record label and popularize hip hop music.
